“The Wisdom of Water”, A collection of work by Marc Isolda and Cynthia O'Connor, of A Thousand Words Photography will be on display at the Sherman Library from May 1st through May 31st. The photographs include both silver gelatin and giclee' prints capturing the beauty, the power and the serenity of water. Brooks, rivers, lakes and the oceans...we are surrounded by water; it is the very essence of life. Water amuses us, cleanses our body and soul, nourishes us.....In the words of W.H. Auden, “Thousands have lived without love, but none without water.”

May 30th My Friend, My Friend: the Story of Thoreau's Relationship with Emerson by Harmon Smith. A gracefully written dual biography that charts the personal friendship as well as the intellectual cross-fertilization between two of America's greatest early thinkers and writers.

July 18th The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America. A skilled and successful interweaving of the parallel stories of Daniel H. Burnham, the architect in charge of construction of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer pursuing his own passions right down the street. Dicussion led by Pat Corrigan.

September 5th Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy The award-winning recent translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky breathes new life into this venerable Russian classic--equally intriguing as social commentay, philosophical and political treatise and one of the greatest love stories in all of literature. Discussion lead by Mary Rindfleisch.
