Sunday, July 20th, 2008 will be a very special day in the history of Roxbury, Connecticut. On that date "MOUNTAINS" by Alexander Calder will be dedicated at the Roxbury Minor Memorial Library. We were privileged to have had Alexander Calder be part of our community for many years, and we are honored that through the generosity of the Calder Foundation, this historic work will be on long term loan to the town where Alexander Calder was our neighbor and friend for so many years.
Alexander Calder was born in 1898 and he died in 1976. This July also marks the 110th anniversary of his birth. So, we will be celebrating not only the dedication of this historic piece, but also Alexander Calder's life.
With this work, which will always be on view for everyone to enjoy, comes the responsibility for its preservation and safety. We are hopeful that the community will come together to ensure that this historic piece of art, by our most famous local artist, will be maintained for generations to come.

The Minor Memorial Library Contemplation Garden, designed by Roxbury's David Gardener, offers an outdoor reading room for libray patrons. Enclosed in a shrub border of Viburnum prunifolium (known as Blackhaw viburnum), which is a great native species, the garden fetures a double row of 28 European Hornbeam trees (Carpinus Betulus "Fastigiata") trees lining a walkway that borders a large grass rectangular lawn. Memorial benches are positioned amid trees for seating. The meandering South Street Walk between the Contemplation Garden and the Library's front entrance is enhanced with Specimen Trees.
The Contemplation Garden is also a place of repose and thought that offers a beautiful way to memorialize a family member or friend. Garden trees may be sponsored for $1000. Each sponsored tree will be designated with a 3-inch by 5-inch heavy brass engraved marker.
Of the nine Specimen Trees designed for the Library's South street Walk, two are available for sponsorship at a cost of $1500 each: 1. Magnolia "Elizabeth" 2. White Fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus)
For more information or to discuss arrangements for your choice of a Memorial Tree, or a Specimen tree, please speak with Valerie Annis, Library Director at 860/350-2181.
Thank you for your interest.
