The Rockville Public Library
Welcome to the
Rockville Public Library

Vernon's Information Resource

Getting a Library Card
Once you have a card from a Connecticut public library, you can use it in any public library in the state.  For this reason, you must obtain your card in the town where you live, to avoid duplication.  To get a Rockville Public Library card, you need a photo ID showing your current address in the town of Vernon.  If your photo ID does not include your Vernon address, you will need an additional proof of residence, such as a piece of mail sent to you at a street address here in town.  So that we can contact you concerning reserves that you have placed or overdue or lost materials, we also need to have a working phone number.  We will issue cards to children age 3 and older when a parent or guardian has a Rockville Public Library card.

Loan Period
All materials except videos and passes to area attractions are charged out for three weeks. They can be renewed twice if there are no reserves on the items.

Most videos and DVDs are charged out for three days, and some "nonfiction" videos go out for one week.  Each card holder may take a total of three videos and/or DVDs at a time.

Passes go our for two days to holders of adult Rockville cards. They are not renewable and must be handed to a staff member when they are returned.

Patrons must present their own library cards when checking out any materials.

Fines
Most materials:  10 cents per day.
Compact disks:  25 cents per day.
Videos and DVDs:  $2 (two dollars) per day.
Failure to rewind videos:  $2 per video
Passes:  $2 per day.
Failure to pick up interlibrary loans:  $2 per title
Fines are not charged for Sundays, holidays,
and any other days when the library is not open.

Patrons will be charged full replacement costs for lost or damaged materials.

Returns
A book drop is located near the entrance on the driveway side of the building.  All library materials except passes may be returned via the book drop when the library is closed.

For your convenience, you may return books taken out of any Connecticut public library to any other public library in the state.  The items will be marked returned on the day they are received wherever you return them and then will be shipped back to the library to which they belong.  The only exceptions are interlibrary loans, which must be returned to the library where the patron picked them up.

"Connecticard"
A statewide system allows patrons holding cards from their hometown libraries to take out materials in other public libraries throughout Connecticut.

Interlibrary Loans
If our library does not have the material you need, we will attempt to obtain it for you from another library.  If you wish to take advantage of this service, please request an interlibrary loan.  To access this service electronically, click on the "Place on ILL" link on this web site.

Local History Collection
The library has an extensive collection of local history materials about the city of Rockville and town of Vernon, including city directories, biographical material on prominent families, and Rockville High School yearbooks.  Because many of these items are irreplaceable, patrons must provide contact information and leave their driver's licenses with library staff while they are using local history materials

Computerized Resources
Internet Access
Terminals to access the Internet are available in both the adult and children's departments of the library.  Terminals in the children's department may be used only by children in grade six or below.  Library staff will provide details on using them.  Terminals in the adult department are available to anyone with an adult library card.  Those under age 18 need signed parental consent to use the Internet because the system is unfiltered.  To access the Internet, patrons must enter their library card barcode on the computer screen.  Each patron is allowed one hour of Internet time per day. Printouts are available at 10 cents per page.
Patrons must use their own cards to access the Internet.  Because using someone else's card is a form of identity theft, those caught doing so will have their privileges suspended.

Word Processors
Word processing software is available for patrons to use on two computers in the adult department and one in the children's department.  Printouts are available at 10 cents per page.

Online Catalog Terminals
Terminals containing the library's online catalog as well as those of most Connecticut libraries also provide access to other databases for research purposes.  Library staff can provide assistance in using these resources.
