CHILDREN 1. www.ala.org/alsc/ncwc.html Notable Children’s Websites -- Professional librarians choose sites here for ages birth through 14. You may also nominate a site for inclusion. 2. Berit's Best Sites for Children -- A site maintained by a Librarian since 1994. The sites are for children up to age 12 and are rated from 1 to 5. TEENAGERS 3. www.ala.org/teenhoopla Teen Hoopla -- This site for young people age 12-18 is a project of the Young Adult Library Services Association. This site not only selects sites suitable for teens but provides opportunities for interaction (such as submitting book reviews) K-12 SITES 4. www.ala.org/parentspage/greatsites 700+ Amazing, Spectacular, Mysterious, Wonderful Websites for Kids and the Adults Who Care About Them -- This site which has more than 700 links is probably the most inclusive site for young people. Sponsored by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. Good sites for parents as well. 5. www.ajkids.com Ask Jeeves for Kids™ -- Unlike sites that take a day or more to answer questions, this searching site allows questions in plain English and responds with one site. 6. www.yahooligans.com Yahooligans! -- Yahoo is one of the Internet’s most popular portals. These sites are kid-friendly and safe. More emphasis on fun sites than some that are just schoolwork oriented. MEL (The Michigan Electronic Library) -- This site is designed for young people, parents and educators of the State of Michigan. It is a project of the Library of Michigan and the University of Michigan. There is a children’s page and a young adult page. This site has an excellent search engine.8. http://www.ipl.org/youth/ The Internet Public Library -- There are sites selected for youth (ages 4-11) and teens (ages 13 –19, parents and educators. It is a project of the University of Michigan’s School of Information. There are many excellent sites for young people on the Internet. The list above includes only some of the largest and most useful. There are many other excellent sites; especially those created by individual libraries, that room does not allow us to include.
