Fall Schedule Goes into Effect after Labor Day Holiday

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Library will be closed this Sunday and Monday in observance of Labor Day. Beginning next week on September 9th, Sunday open hours from 1 to 4 PM will return. Don't miss this convenient opportunity for the whole family to take advantage of the Library's offerings, from students on deadline for an assignment to commuters stocking up on audiobooks for the daily drive.
Storytime Registration September 4th through 10th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Registration for fall pre-school storytimes and after-school programs will take place from Tuesday, September 4th through Monday, September 10th. There are some exciting new offerings, so stop by Children's Services to sign up and get your full calendar of fall children's events.

Programs begin the week of October 1st. In the meantime, be sure to visit us on Monday and Saturday at 10:30 Am for Drop-in Storytime (for ages 3 and up) and Friday Flicks on Fridays at 11 AM or 2 PM (for ages 2 and up). Also continuing for older children and teens during September are Scrabble on Tuesdays at 6:30 and meetings of the Bookworms, Junior Critics, YA Critics and Nutmeg Nibblers book discussion groups. Follow the link below for dates and details.

Calling all Parents!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Look for representatives from the Library at East Ridge and Scotts Ridge open houses on September 6th, where we will be on hand to provide information about all the ways we can support your child's educational objectives in the coming year. We'll have library card applications and much more, so do stop by for a chat.
Parents of school children of all ages are invited to attend our Parents Back to School tours at the Library on Saturday, October 6th at 10 AM and Monday, October 22nd at 2 PM. We'll give you a brief but informative introduction to Children's Services and the many resources you'll find there to make the school year a success. Contact us at rdgchild@biblio.org or 438-2282 x 1024 to sign up.
September Is National Library Card Sign-up Month
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Your Ridgefield Library card is your passport to a universe of information and entertainment. It gives you access to over 130,000 books, DVDs, audiobooks and more, as well as to our sophisticated computer resources, both in the library and remotely. To encourage you to make sure every member of your family has an up-to-date library card, we are offering several incentives during the month of September.

  • Everyone who signs up for a new card or renews an expired card will be entered into a drawing for one of several Ridgefield Library book bags full of goodies.
  • Lost cards will be replaced free of charge throughout the month (normal charge is $1.00).
  • Card applications will be available throughout the Library and online.

Take advantage of our online card application form.

Save the Date for Camp Snooze

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Saturday, October 20th is the date for this fall's Camp Snooze, our popular sleepover at the Library exclusively open to fourth graders. This chaperoned visit offers participants plenty of fun activities, great food and a unique opportunity to experience the Library after hours.
Cost is $100 per child, which supports the Library's Children's Services department. For more information, contact Emily Whittemore at ewhittemore@biblio.org or 438-2282 x1022.
Double Dose of Adult Programs on September 6th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Join us in the Dayton Program Room at 7 PM on Thursday, September 6th for a screening and discussion of Gobi Women's Song, a documentary film by Sas Carey, who will be on hand to present this latest in our World Views series. Sas Carey, RN, M.Ed., is a holistic nurse and educator who is now a filmmaker and lecturer. She has traveled to Mongolia many times, setting up laboratories and filming the nomadic tribes. A mother and grandmother, Sas also manages the Mongolian Medicine Project through Ecologia and is dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of nomadic women.

At 7:30 that same evening, our AuthorTalk series goes on the road to Books on the Common, for an appearance by Howard Frank Mosher, author of many acclaimed novels, including A Stranger in the Kingdom and his most recent release, the charming On Kingdom Mountain. Don't miss this opportunity to meet a craftsman who "weaves homespun humor, a provincial New England setting and eccentric characters to create a satisfying, unique novel" (Publishers Weekly).

More about our co-sponsor, Books on the Common.

Self Defense for Teens on September 18th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sixth to twelfth graders are invited to join us on Tuesday, September 18th in the Dayton Program Room from 4-5:30 PM for an introduction to self defense techniques to help you get out of sticky situations. Taught by instructors from the United Studios for Self Defense. Sign-up is required by calling 438-2282 x1024. Remember to wear loose-fitting clothes (t-shirt and sweat pants).
NEW! Middle and high schoolers can keep informed about future activities by picking up a copy of our new monthly teentalk newsletter.
Check out the Teen section of our webpage.
Memoir Writing Workshop to Be Led by Joanne Dobson
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sign up now for a four-part workshop entitled Writing for your Life, to take place on Saturdays in September at 10 AM. Professor Joanne Dobson, a former literature and creative writing teacher at Fordham University and acclaimed mystery writer, has presented numerous programs at the Ridgefield Library on everything from the poetry of Emily Dickinson to the detective novels of Sue Grafton. Call 438-2282 to register for this latest in our Pen to Paper writing workshop series.

Ridgefield Folk Returns September 16th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson will be on hand to entertain you on September 16th at the first of the fall's Ridgefield Folk concerts. Tickets will be given out starting at 1 PM, doors open at 1:30, and the performance begins at 2 PM.
This Vermont-based husband and wife duo perform their own special blend of traditional ballads and 60-s era pop harmonies to create what they have dubbed "retro folk." Come hear what Roger McGuinn, the Boston Herald and Sing Out! magazine have raved about - all for free, thanks to the Friends of the Library.
Visit Rebecca's and Ken's website.
Shutterbugs on Display
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Shutterbugs photography group meets regularly at the Library to exchange tips and techniques. This month, they will be sharing their work with the rest of us in a group exhibit in the Dayton Program Room.

The show runs through the end of the month and is available for viewing whenever the room is not in use for another program. A reception open to the public will be held on Sunday, September 8th from 2 to 4 PM.
