Fall Book Sale Approaching; Cut-off for Donations this Friday

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Friends of the Library are busy getting ready for their big Fall Book Sale, which will take place November 2-5. In order to sort and price the thousands of books in every category, the Friends must stop accepting new donations this Friday, October 19th.
For the rest of this week, you may bring in your good condition books during the Library's open hours. Please pack them in boxes or sturdy bags for easier handling. Receipts are available for tax purposes if you know the approximate number of items you are donating.
The Friends will resume accepting donations on November 12th.
Check here for guidelines for donations.
Workshop this Thursday Shows "Top Ten Ways to Get Kids Excited about Reading"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Don't miss this latest in our new series of workshops for parents and caregivers, to take place on Thursday, October 18th from 2 to 3 PM in the Dayton Program Room. Registration is not required.

Author, teacher and mom Nora Gaydos will give hands-on demonstrations of learning tools and practices that can be used with Pre-K to Grade 3 children to instill a love of reading.

"Back to School" Tour for Parents next Monday

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Parents of school children of all ages are invited to attend our Parents Back to School tours at the Library on Monday, October 22nd at 2 PM. We'll give you a brief but informative introduction to Children's Services and the many resources you'll find there to make the school year a success. Contact us at rdgchild@biblio.org or 438-2282 x 1024 to sign up.
"Reading Is a Family Affair" Is Coming - Sign Up Now
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Library's popular adult & child book discussion series, Reading is a Family Affair, opens its 2007-2008 series on Wednesday, October 24th at 6:00 PM. Youngsters in Grades 3 and up and their parents are invited for pizza dinner, activities and discussion of James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.

Sign up in Children's Services today and pick up your free family copy of the book, courtesy of the Friends of the Library.

Last Call for Camp Snooze

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Saturday, October 20th is the date for this fall's Camp Snooze, our popular sleepover at the Library exclusively open to fourth graders. This chaperoned visit offers participants plenty of fun activities, great food and a unique opportunity to experience the Library after hours.
Cost is $100 per child, which supports the Library's Children's Services department. Space is limited, and only a few places are still available. For more information, contact Emily Whittemore at ewhittemore@biblio.org or 438-2282 x1022.
Double Dose of Robert Frost this Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Join us in the Dayton Program Room at 7 PM on Thursday, October 18th as actor Stephen Collins returns with a program of the poetry of Robert Frost. Mr. Collins has appeared several times in our Portraits in Motion series. While not impersonating an historical figure this time, his dramatic skills will no doubt make for a riveting evening.

The next day, Friday, October 19th, the monthly Poetry Discussion Group will continue its own exploration of the poetry of Frost, under the leadership of poet and retired English professor Alan Holder. Join us in the Dayton Program Room at 1 PM for this absorbing session.

Visit Stephen Collins' website.

Teen Read Week Features Movie on Friday

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Teen Read Week theme of LOL @ your Library will be on display this Friday, October 19th at 4 PM, when 6th-12th graders are invited to join the fun in the Dayton Program Room at a screening of Blades of Glory starring comedian Will Ferrell.
Teens can also "laugh out loud" by coming into Children's Services anytime this week with a clean joke to tell Teen Services Librarian Geri Diorio. All jokers earn a piece of candy (one joke per day per person, please!).
Check out the Teen section of our webpage.
Memoir Writing Group to Start in November
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Participants in our recent memoir writing workshop led by Joanne Dobson have formed an informal writing group, which will meet at the Library the first Saturday morning of each month, starting on November 3rd at 10 AM. The sessions will include advice from other writers, a prompt with writing time, critique and sharing.

Call Lesley Lambton at 203-438-2282 x 1013 for more information.

Ridgefield Folk Presents Vance Gilbert on October 28th

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Popular singer/songwriter Vance Gilbert will make a repeat appearance in the Dayton Program Room on Sunday, October 28th. Tickets will be given out starting at 1 PM, doors open at 1:30, and the performance begins at 2 PM. Admission is free, thanks to the Friends of the Library.
Dirty Linen magazine says of Vance Gilbert: he is "among the quintessential musical poets...his lyrics are highly personal, his tenor vocals fluid and enthralling..brilliantly intuitive guitar playing, and immeasurable courage...gives you a feeling of utter joy."
Sample Vance Gilbert's musical stylings.
Book Discussions for Younger Readers Continue
Every week, Children's Services offers a variety of book discussion groups for various ages. Junior Critics (grades 4 & 5) and YA Critics (grades 6-8) alternate on Tuesday afternoons to share what they have been reading, while Nutmeg Nibblers (grades 4-6) and Bookworms (grades 2 & 3) meet monthly to discuss a selected title.
New participants are always welcome, so drop by Children's Services or call 203-438- 2282 x1024 for more information.
