In bad
times even more than in good...

by Carl
R. DeMilia
Library Director
Many years ago, there was an American Library Association poster hung
near the reference desk and stated that libraries were even more
important during bad economic times than in good economic times.
Being new to the profession at the time, the importance of such
statements really didn't sink in. Full Story

New Registration Option
by Peggy Ganong, Library
Technology Coordinator
You log onto our website at www.biblio.org/newmilford and find some really
interesting programs for you and/or your children. We have programs
for adults, teens and children. When you read about the programs we
offer, the instructions are to stop by the library to register or
to call the library. Well, you don't have time to stop by and the
library is closed when you find the program you want!! What
can you do? We now have the answer for you - online
registration!
Just access the Calendar of Events from
our website, go to the date of the program(s) you are interested
in, scroll to the bottom of the program description and click on
the button that says REGISTER. Enter the information required and
you will receive an e-mail confirmation of your registration. It is
that simple! You may do this in the comfort of your home on your
schedule and in real time. If you get closed out of a program due
to space limitations, don't worry because you will be notified that
you are put on a waiting list. Then if someone cancels, your name
will go to the top of the list and you will receive another e-mail
announcing that you are now registered!
We have lots of exciting programs coming up very soon, so be the
first in line to register for the ones you would like.

Adult Winter Reading Program
by Sally
Tornow, Public Services Librarian
We have an exciting program this year with a few changes to the
regular format. As always, any adult format item (print or
audio) is acceptable. However, this year we have a travel
theme, so anything that has even the least bit to do with travel
will qualify. It can be nonfiction, fiction, a mystery,
anything that involves traveling somewhere or taking place
somewhere foreign (even the future or the past!). We have
provided a bibliography, but it's simply a list of staff favorites
to help you get started, not a requirement.
When you sign up online at Calendar of Events or in
person, you will receive a key light, the bibliography that
includes instructions, and a few 'postcards.' At the end of the
program, (Friday, March 27th) we will pull three raffle tickets
that will win the three prizes offered. Full Story

Upcoming Adult Programs
by Margaret
Kistinger
Reference/Information
Services Librarian
Is the current economy keeping you home more often than you would
like? Is cabin fever setting in from too much cold or too
much snow? Break out of winter's doldrums and enjoy the free
programs offered by the Adult Reference/Information Services
Department. Programs began in January and will continue throughout
the year, with an array of guest speakers who will enlighten,
inform and entertain.
On January 24th the Lyme Disease Task Force presented the film
Under Our Skin, a look into one of the most misunderstood and
misdiagnosed illnesses of our time. This award winning documentary
was presented at the Tribeca Film
Festival where it was an Audience Choice Award Finalist. Mr. Russ
Cornelius and other dedicated members of the Lyme Disease Task
Force answered audience questions after the screening.

Children
by Sue

Children's Services Librarian
The Stock Market Game
Once again, New Milford Public Library's Children's Department
invites students in grades 5 through 12 to join out Young Adult
Librarian, Mrs. Valerie Fisher, in playing The Stock Market Game, a
10 week simulation that allows participants to invest a
hypothetical $100,000 in the stock market. We will be
offering 2 groups this session: Mondays from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM for
beginners and Tuesdays from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM for students that
have participated in past Stock Market Games.
The Stock Market Game is a motivational program that stimulates
learning about economics, finance and the American economic
system. Students strive to create the best-performing
portfolio using a live trading simulation. They work together
in teams, researching and evaluating stocks as they compete for the
top spot.
The game starts on February 23 and will run through May 5.
Registration is required for this free program. For more
information, call Mrs. Fisher in the Children's Dept. at 355-1191
x204.
