CVSBH - Connecticut Volunteer Services for the Blind and Handicapped

studio in use

Southbury Public Library is proud to host an outstanding, well-equipped recording studio for CVSBH, a private, non-profit corporation that provides audio reading materials for the state Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. It is one of only five such recording facilities in the state of Connecticut. All volunteers, Southbury CVSBH has produced 400 books on tape since the studio was established in 1985. The Southbury unit is highly regarded in the state for its significant contribution to the Connecticut State Library tape collection that becomes part of the catalog of the National Library Service.

None of CVSBH’s efforts to both produce and finance this admirable service would be possible without the dedication of so many volunteers. Each recorded book requires a team of three people: a narrator, monitor and reviewer. The narrator prepares and reads the book in a soundproof booth. The monitor handles the recording equipment while following the text to catch any errors. The reviewer acts as the “quality controller” who listens to the recorded material before it is given to the evaluation panel, that includes patrons who use the books.
