Our Mission

The purpose of the Children's Department of the Southbury Library is to provide a safe, nurturing and culturally stimulating environment for children and adults that will encourage life long reading and learning.

In The Children's Room:

  • BOOKS: Books are separated by age appropriateness. For babies, there are Tiny Tot Board Books. We have an extensive Picture Book Collection for pre-schoolers. Beginners Readers are divided into three catagories; Emergent Readers, Easy Beginners Readers and Reading on my Own Books.
  • Our fiction collection is intended for grades 2-6, and our nonfiction collection includes circulating encyclopedias. Reference materials and new encyclopedias are also available for in-building use. For parents, we have a Parent's Shelf dealing with subjects that parents might want to share with their children. Our Parent/Teacher collection includes educational and parenting adult books.

  • PARK AND MUSEUM PASSES: Are here! Check here for a list of passes, what you get, and all the rules!

  • DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT: MyLibraryDV, our new downloadable movie service, now offers a small (but growing!) selection of family films. There's even a special collection Caillou and Boohbah episodes just right for your little one.

  • COMPUTERS: Public access computers are available to assist patrons with finding books and materials. There is also computers for children for word processing and CD-ROM usage.
  • AUDIOBOOKS: Our audiobooks include books on tape and books on CD. We have audiobooks for all ages, including many Nutmeg and Newberry Winners.
  • CD-ROMS: We currently have over 100 CD-ROMs. Our CD-ROMs may be checked out for a three-week loan period, or can be played in the Children's Department.
  • MUSIC COLLECTION: In addition to classical music often playing in the Children's Department, we have music tapes and CDs that can be checked out.
